South African Airways (SAA) is navigating a pivotal strategic transformation.
The national carrier is focused on broadening its global footprint, refining its regional African routes, and restoring commercial confidence after a prolonged period of turbulence.
Under the stewardship of Acting Group Chief Executive Officer Matshela Seshibe, SAA is balancing ambitious network expansion with strict fiscal discipline.
Central to SAA’s growth trajectory is the expansion of key strategic alliances, most notably with Emirates and Turkish Airlines. These partnerships are designed to bridge critical operational gaps, offering passengers seamless connections across Europe, the Middle East, and the rest of Africa without requiring heavy capital expenditure on fleet expansion.
Speaking to Gugulethu Mfuphi on Kaya Biz, Acting Group Chief Officer Matshela Seshibe unpacked SAA’s operational recovery, route strategy, fleet plans and the broader economic impact of a stronger national carrier.
“The expansion of our partnership with Emirates marks an important milestone in SAA’s strategy to strengthen connectivity across Africa while enhancing access to global markets.”
Seshibe shared that operationally, SAA has prioritised reliability and schedule integrity to rebuild credibility amongst everyday travellers, and that looking ahead over the next 12 to 18 months, SAA remains focused on disciplined growth.
