A South African woman is in intensive care after allegedly being stabbed more than 40 times by a Burundian pastor and trained soldier.
The early morning assault also left the victim’s young daughter injured. A neighbour pursued the suspect and alerted the police, leading to his arrest.
The attack follows growing tension over the victim’s brother, local artist Pastor Mjosty, who was publicly praised by the anti-illegal immigration movement March and March on 30 June.
The suspect allegedly confronted the victim over her brother’s political alignment, but she maintained that her brother was free to support whomever he chose.
A later update revealed the pair were previously in a relationship, and the victim had obtained a protection order against the suspect a year ago.
The suspect recently broke contact, claiming she had ended their relationship because her brother disliked him over the March and March dispute.
The suspect is currently hospitalised and behaving erratically after attempting suicide in his holding cell. Condemning the attack, a March and March press release stated:
“We are devastated by this cowardly act of violence against an innocent family. No person should be targeted, stabbed, or terrorised because their family members choose to stand up for the rule of law and the sovereignty of our nation.”
