South Africa is mourning the loss of beloved actress Nandi Nyembe, whose remarkable career left an indelible mark on film, theatre, and television.
Mam’ Nandi was born in 1950 in Kliptown, Johannesburg. She will be remembered for her undeniable talent, warm demeanour, and unforgettable contribution to the South African film industry.
She passed away last week at the age of 75. Her family and the Sports, Arts and Culture Ministry confirmed her death. Though the details surrounding her passing were not revealed, it was known that her health had been deteriorating.
EARLY LIFE AND DEBUT
Nandi Nyembe’s acting career began in the late 1980s when she made her first appearance in the film Saturday Night at the Palace. She portrayed Miriam, and without fail, managed to showcase the vulnerability of ordinary Black South African women under the apartheid regime.
In the early 2000s, she also featured in South Africa’s Yizo Yizo, a groundbreaking series highlighting culture in township schools post-apartheid.

RISE TO STARDOM
She continued to grace Mzansi’s screens, appearing on popular telenovelas including Zone 14 and Isibaya. If there’s one similarity in all the roles Mam’ Nandi played, it is that she was often cast as the wise woman — the voice of reason, and always a no-nonsense character.

ICONIC ROLES
Among her most memorable performances were her roles in Mzansi Magic’s Icala (2023–2025) and Showmax’s Adulting (2023–2025). She showcased her versatility and brought authentic South African stories to life in each role.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
Mam’ Nandi was nominated for the South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) Golden Horn for Best Supporting Actress in the Showmax series Adulting (2024). She was also nominated in 2017 for Best Supporting Role for eTV’s Ashes to Ashes.
FINAL BOW
Nandi’s passing is a painful loss to the South African film and television industry. This marks the end of what was once a great career and the beginning of a beautiful legacy.
