South African media personality Lasizwe Dambuza and broadcasting giant MultiChoice have reportedly gone their separate ways, resulting in the alleged removal of Awkward Dates from the Mzansi Magic lineup.
In March, Lasizwe excitedly announced that his YouTube-born show, Awkward Dates, would be premiering on MultiChoice’s Mzansi Magic channels. At the time, he described it as a dream come true—an emotional milestone for “a young boy from Pimville, Soweto” who made it to national television.
Awkward Dates took the 9pm slot on Saturdays.
Awkward Dates features Lasizwe going on lighthearted dates with public figures, where they open up about their personal lives, careers, and love interests.
The show has drawn major names such as Julius Malema and Sizwe Dhlomo—some accepting the invite, others declining.
The split comes shortly after MultiChoice severed ties with controversial podcaster Macgyver “MacG” Mukhwevho, following backlash over his comments about media personality Minnie Dlamini.
Recently, Lasizwe also came under fire for hosting Ugandan journalist Simon Kaggwa Njala—known for his infamous “Why are you gay?” question.
Critics on social media labeled Lasizwe’s decision to invite Njala as insensitive and tone-deaf due to Njala’s alleged homophobic behaviour.
I really hate that Lasizwe’s content is made for the amusement of homophobic straight men. It is a not so gentle reminder that some gay people really do have the privelege of being gay in gated communities and their sexuality can be memefied without suffering the 1/2 https://t.co/NmKgFS8dYx

While some reports suggest Lasizwe chose to walk away, others claim MultiChoice terminated the partnership.
Despite the fallout, Awkward Dates will continue to air on YouTube. In the upcoming episode, Lasizwe sits down with Cyan Boujee, a popular DJ and social media influencer.
