An employee from the Walter Sisulu University who is accused of fatally shooting a student has been released on R10 000 bail.
Manelisi Mampane briefly appeared before the Mthatha Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Mampane is also accused of the attempted murder of two other students Lizwa Ndzumo and Sesethu Ndamase.
He allegedly shot and killed a 24-year-old student, Sisonke Mbolekwa last month, during a student protest over better living conditions.
In a statement released by the Economic Freedom Fighters Youth Command(EFFYC), the organisation says the court’s decision to grant Mampane bail is the main reason why most communities take the law into their own hands.
“The justice system has the potential of being overridden by the public where justice is not being accepted by the public as a means to protect all those who cannot do so independently.
“We, the EFFYC, take the view that where courts do not take seriously public trust and concern, communities will find creative ways to respond to small-time, cheap rascal criminals such as the accused Manelisi Mampane,” the statement read.
The Youth Command has called on the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to file an urgent appeal against the court’s decision.
