Investigations are underway following a tragic shooting incident at Walter Sisulu University’s (WSU) Mthatha campus on Tuesday, which resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to several others.
According to reports, the incident unfolded amidst escalating student protests.
Details surrounding the incident remain under scrutiny, but it is alleged that the unrest began when a group of students targeted the on-campus residence of the university’s residence manager and his family.
The Ministry of Higher Education and Training has confirmed the incident, stating that multiple individuals sustained injuries.
Tragically, one person identified as neither a registered student nor a university staff member succumbed to their injuries.
According to the Student Representative Council (SRC) leader, Themba Zikhali, a student was fatally shot by the residence manager, and three other students were hospitalised as a result of the shooting.
The alleged shooting has ignited further demonstrations across the WSU Mthatha campus, with students expressing outrage and demanding answers.
Police have launched a full investigation into the sequence of events and are expected to provide further clarity as their inquiries progress. The university administration has yet to release an official statement, but the incident has undoubtedly sent shockwaves through the campus community and raised concerns about student safety and the handling of protests within higher education institutions.
