The Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean MacPherson, received the final investigative report on Monday regarding the George building collapse, which claimed 34 lives and left 28 others injured in May 2024.
MacPherson said this report marks a critical milestone in uncovering the truth behind the collapse and holding those who are responsible for the tragic disaster accountable.
“Accountability cannot be optional when human lives are lost due to human error.
“As the Department, we will now ensure that a tragedy such as the George Building collapse never happens again”, he said.
MacPherson blamed the collapse of the 5-story building on systemic failures across various regulatory bodies and a lack of cooperation among key stakeholders.
He further promised to return to George to present the findings of the report to affected families.
“They deserve to hear directly from us, not through the media, about what went wrong and how we intend to rectify it”, he said.
