The Gauteng Health Department has frozen the salaries of 66 alleged ghost workers.
As of Wednesday, the department reported that, with the exception of pending cases, the pay of 66 employees who were still unverified had been frozen.
Gauteng Health and Wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko launched the Ziveze (Reveal Yourself) campaign as one of the interventions to make sure the department reduces unnecessary spending by making sure that each individual receiving a pay from the government is a genuine employee helping to provide.
It was launched in October to verify that the department employs 85 642 people.
Phase 1 included the successful verification of 31 345 workers between 14 October and 6 December.
The Department claims that on 13 January, the second phase got underway to confirm the remaining 54 297 employees in all medical facilities. There are currently 23 789 employees who have not yet been validated.
“We have limited resources at our disposal and cannot afford to waste money on ghost employees, while hundreds of healthcare workers are looking for employment and thousands of people require access to healthcare services. There is no reasonable employee who will object to being verified,” Nkomo-Ralehoko said.
