The South African men’s football team, Bafana Bafana, have qualified for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) without kicking a ball.
Bafana arrived in Kampala, Uganda, on Thursday ahead of their AFCON qualifier against the hosts on Friday. While preparing for training, they received news of a development in South Sudan that had implications for Group K.
Sudan achieved a stunning 3-2 victory over Congo Brazzaville in another Group K match on Thursday, a result that enabled both Bafana Bafana and Uganda to qualify for the tournament without needing to play, while relaxing in their hotels in Kampala.
Broos’ team can now approach their Friday qualifier against Uganda at the Mandela National Stadium with confidence, having secured back-to-back AFCON qualification.
While the South African camp celebrated, Broos tempered expectations, saying they weren’t celebrating just yet and would still approach the games against Uganda on Friday, 15 November, and South Sudan in Cape Town on Tuesday, 19 November 2024, with full commitment.
“We want to win the game and finish top of the group, which means we need to beat Uganda. So qualifying doesn’t change anything for us. I hope it will be a nice game with a full house and a lot of atmosphere inside the stadium. This will be great motivation for the players, and let’s hope the best team wins,” Broos said in part.
