It was an emotional moment when Tatjana Smith clinched a touch of gold, at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Monday night, 29 July.
Tatjana, who made a name for herself as a breaststroke champion, won the first gold medal for South Africa in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke.
The 27-year old came from behind to win gold, overtaking China’s Quinting Tang who was in the lead in a spectacular finish.
Tatjana, a professional swimmer who specialises in breaststroke events is a former world record hold in the long course 200m breaststroke and the African record holder in the long course and short course 100m breaststroke as well as the short course 200m breaststroke.
Tatjana Smith married her husband, Joel Smith in November and changed her surname from Schoenmaker.
This is Smith’s third Olympics medal, with 2 golds and 1 silver behind her name. She is just 1 medal away from tying with South Africa’s highest Olympic medalists’, Chad le Clos.
