Almost a week after the George building collapse, the death toll from the fatal build has climbed to 32, with 20 others still unaccounted for.
On Tuesday, 14 May the George Municipality confirmed the revised death toll which increased from Monday’s numbers as rescue efforts reached the 187 hour mark.
The 5-storey building on a construction site in George collapsed on Wednesday, 08 May on 81 workers who were on site.
Twenty-six of those who were declared dead were men, while 6 were women.
Rescue and recovery efforts continue into week two after the incident took place at 75 Victoria Street where a partially-built building collapsed.
Since the first call for support by Psychosocial Support Practitioners was put out on 11 May 2024, we can confirm that adequate numbers of fluent practitioners in Chewa, Portuguese, and Shona languages are all on-site to address the emotional, social, and overall mental health needs of those affected by the building collapse. Of the 61 people who have been rescued and recovered, 12 remain in hospital.
A cause for the building collapse is unknown at this stage and an investigation is underway to determine what caused the 5-storey building from collapsing.
The company in charge of the George construction site has committed to cooperating with authorities to determine the cause of the incident.
NeoTrend Developer has been identified as the construction company, which was disclosed at a media briefing on Tuesday, 07 May.
Meanwhile police are investigating claims that some of the employees on site may have been unskilled and undocumented.
