UPDATE: George building collapse death toll rises to 24, while 13 people are hospitalised.
There are currently 24 people who have succumbed to the tragedy in the Western Cape’s George building collapse.
Of the estimated 81 individuals on-site at the time of the fall, twenty-eight remain unaccounted for, and 13 are in the hospital.The South African Police Service has announced that they have opened an inquest docket in connection with the incident.
The National Minister for Public Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Sihle Zikalala, will be on-site on Monday.
The George municipality stated that it is putting plans in place to hasten the forensic pathology services and the police’s identification of the deceased while rescue efforts continue.
“Rescue and recovery efforts continue into a week after the incident took place at 75 Victoria Street where a partially-built building collapsed. Rescue workers and other role players have been on site for 160 hours. The confirmed statistics for the incident are:
* Total estimated individuals on-site when the incident occurred: 81
Garden Route District JOC/George Municipality
* Rescued and recovered: 50
* Of which deceased: 21
* Currently hospitalised: 15
* Unaccounted for: 31″
