Melinda Gates announces her resignation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Melinda French Gates plans to leave the massive foundation that she and her ex-husband, Bill Gates, established almost 25 years ago to focus entirely on her work on behalf of women and girls, which has been a significant portion of her recent charitable giving.
After 27 years of marriage, Mr. and Ms. Gates announced their intention to file for divorce in May 2021, casting a shadow over the organization’s future course.
When it was announced at the time, the foundation said that Ms. French Gates would step down in May 2023 or later and that she would continue to serve as Mr. Gates’ co-chair.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which she and her former husband formed in 2000, will now be known as the Gates Foundation, as a result of her decision, which was announced on Monday.
“After careful thought and reflection, I have decided to resign from my role as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. My last day of work at the foundation will be June 7th. This is not a decision I came to lightly. I am immensely proud of the foundation that Bill and I built together and of the extraordinary work it is doing to address inequities around the world. I care deeply about the foundation team, our partners around the world, and everyone who is touched by its work.”
