Zizi Kodwa, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture is considering taking action against the Democratic Alliance (DA) over the party’s election advert depicting the South African flag burning.
Kodwa has slammed the DA’s advert abhorrent and unpatriotic and has sought advice from the Acting Director-General, advisors and the legal unit of his Department to decide what recourse government can take when national symbols are denigrated and desecrated.
“The descration of national symbols should not be part of election campaigning and should not be tolerated in any instance.
We are taking steps to ensure that there are consequences for such actions.
It is our duty to ensure the protection of our national symbols which are a product of our hard-earned democracy.”
While DA leader John Steenhuisen explained the messaging of the advert, telling South Africans that if they continue voting for the African National Congress (ANC), the country will be burnt to ashes.
The DA’s TV election advert has raised eyebrows with social media users shocked that the party would resort to burning the country’s flag which represents the “rainbow nation.”
President Cyril Ramaphosa has also condemned the burning of the flag for party political gain.
