A 21-year old student has been arrested for the alleged murder and rape of teacher, Kirsten Kluyts.
Kirsten’s naked body was found along the George Lea Park trail at the Sandton Sports Club on 29 October by fellow runners who were participating in a MyRun 5km race.
The 34-year old was strangled to death and raped, allegedly by the 21-year old suspect who was reportedly hiding in bushes and surprised Kirsten who was jogging with headphones on.
Her body was found near a secluded part of the club, near a gate which was opened for the race event.
Kirsten’s attacker took her clothes and watch, leaving her cellphone and headphones behind.
The trail, entrances and exits of the Sandton Sports Club has CCTV cameras, footage of which police worked through to make a quick arrest in the murder case.
On Sunday, 26 November, Sandton police detectives arrested a 21-year old Sandton Tertiary Institution student from his residence.
The suspect will be charged with murder and will appear before a magistrates court soon.
Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela commended the team’s swift work in making an arrest.
“The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has commended Sandton’s team of detectives that managed to crack the murder case of Ms Kirsten Kluyts by arresting her alleged murderer on Sunday 26 November 2023 in Parkmore suburb.
This follows a thorough investigation by detectives and the cooperation by 24/7 Security Management.
The suspect, a 21-year-old student at a Sandton tertiary institution, was arrested at about 16:00 at the students’ residence.”
