Dr Phumla Makaziwe Mandela, the daughter of former South African President, Nelson Mandela and his first wife, Evelyn Mase, has launched an intimate coffee table book about her late dad.
Mandela: In Honor Of An Extraordinary Life, is a tribute to Dr Phumla’s father, revealing that the man behind the anti-apartheid movement was a “mama’s boy, who was adored by his mother.”
The idea for the book was born after Dr Phumla had a conversation with a New York publishing company, Rizzoli Books.
Dr Phumla’s book which was launched on 10 October, has already received a rave review by the New York Times, describing the book as an intimate rendering of the South African leader’s life.
The book includes never-before-seen personal photographs of the late Tata, family stories, journal entries, and unique charcoal drawings which the late President started working on at the age of 83.
This is the first book that Dr Phumla Makaziwe Mandela has written, and she shared how bittersweet it was for her to put together the first draft of the book.
In an interview with eNCA, Dr Phumla said, “It’s an open secret that I was sad and bitter with my dad. But I realised in my 30’s that anger and bitterness is not going to lead me anywhere I have to be at peace first with myself and at peace with Tata.
He was forced to hide his pain and could not show weakness to the captors. They lived under horrible conditions in prison and that is why many have chronic diseases. The case with Makgatho he never talked about it openly”
