The population of South Africa has surged from 51.7 million in 2011 to 62 million in 2022. To shed light on the implications of this population growth on the economy, Sizwe Dhlomo invited Khaya Sithole, an independent political analyst and CA (SA), to provide insights.
Sithole emphasized that this growth necessitates an economy capable of sustaining it.
“It is unclear whether this growth has been spearheaded by people who are actively participating in the economy. In other words, you can’t draw a parallel relationship between the growth of the population and the country’s economic capacity.”
To gauge the situation, Sithole suggested examining the GDP per capita.
“When you see a decline in GDP per capita, it simply means that the growth in the population has been faster than the growth in the country’s economic output. This simply moves toward a society that is relatively poorer rather than prosperous,” highlighted Sithole.
