The incident began when a group of armed suspects carried out a CIT heist in Springs, Gauteng, earlier in the day. However, their criminal activities were short-lived as law enforcement officers were hot on their trail. Within three hours of the heist, the suspects were located on the M1 South, near the Booysens off-ramp.
A dramatic shootout ensued between the suspects and the police, resulting in one suspect being fatally shot, while two others were apprehended. During the operation, three rifles used by the suspects were seized, and cash and two cellphones were recovered.
The aftermath of the operation led to the closure of the M1 Freeway in both directions, between Xavier Street and Booysens Road, as it became a crime scene. This caused significant traffic disruptions in the area, with traffic traveling northbound being diverted at Xavier Street and southbound traffic being rerouted at Booysens Road.
