This week, the contracts of two Kaizer Chiefs players, namely Itumeleng Khune and Khama Billiat, are set to expire. Club legend and former striker Shane McGregor advises the Soweto giants to let go of Billiat.
McGregor doesn’t believe that Billiat has anything more to offer the team. But he believes club captain Itumeleng Khune still has some good years left in him.
“To be honest, what has Billiat done since he has been at Chiefs? Not much. For the goalkeeper, he can still mature with experience, you can still go for a few more years and also he can help other keepers, so that can be worth it keeping him.
“But for me personally, it is a waste of time keeping Billiat, but as I said, it is a difficult one to call because you don’t know who will come in and what will happen, whether the coach will want to use him.
“He ([Billiat] is a very good player, if you keep him fit and happy, he can do things. But it has not been happening while he has been at Chiefs,” McGregor was quoted by Sowetan Live.
Shane McGregor, 59, is one of the most decorated South African footballers of all time. The ex-footballer played professionally for Grinaker Rangers, Kaizer Chiefs, Pretoria City, and Supersport United.
He is one of the very few players to have scored 20-plus goals in more than one season.
McGregor joined Kaizer Chiefs in 1978 with Fani Madida. In 1992 the pair produced 54 goals. Madida with a record of 34 strikes in 42 and McGregor with 20 when they won the double.
