Nestum, real name Zakele Nyakale from the popular 90s Kwaito group Abashante joins The Hive with Bonolo BeeSting to share what she has been up to in recent years.
Speaking about how the industry has changed since she left the limelight in 2005 to focus on her career in broadcasting, Nestum notes that although the music has evolved, fashion keeps rotating. “Old things come back and trend. I now see people rocking the same hairstyles we had as Abashante,” says Nestum. “We’ve been there done that and got the T-shirt. Now I’m waiting for the trophy.”
With the cost of living at an all-time high, the 42-year-old says it’s imperative to be versatile. “I perform, I MC, dance – It’s important not to be dependent on one thing,” stresses Nestum.
She is currently employed as a station coordinator at a radio station in Johannesburg. She also founded an initiative to help female DJs called ‘Get It, Girl’.”
“In the gigs I host I only book female DJs because women are hardly given a platform. We play all different genres,” said Nestum.
