
What’s the role of the private sector in dealing with SA’s high unemployment crisis?
Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has shown a very bleak picture of the situation in South Africa when it comes to unemployment.
In the three months leading up to March, South Africa’s unemployment rate remained the highest in the world as the nation faced numerous economic challenges.
StatsSA indicated that the rate of unemployment went up slightly by 0.2 of a percentage point from 32.7% in the fourth quarter of 2022 to 32.9% in the first quarter of 2023.
Kaya Biz with Gugulethu Mfuphi spoke to Alan Mukoki – Chief Executive Officer – South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) about what the contribution should be by the private sector in South Africa.

On the short-termism of business in SA
“It is a leadership question, we have created an environment where it is easier as business to point at the government alone and not take responsibility for the leadership shortcoming that we ourselves have.” says Mukoki
Misinterpretation of the role of Transformation in the private sector
“The transformation in South Africa is not just a question of compliance and government policy, it is a business opportunity in itself. How are we going to get all the black women to have a rise in income and to get in skills and competence jobs because that is the future market that is here in South Africa today.” says Mukoki
We need big disruptive programs
“South Africa is one of the most exciting countries in terms of potential and future prospects. The people here are very talented, they are all here, no one is thinking about going some place else. We just lack the confidence and understanding that the solution lies within us. We need to have big kind of programs that are going to be very disruptive.” says Mukoki
