The South African Union of Students met with University Student Representative Councils on the 21st of March 2021 in Pretoria to assess the state of the #NationalShutdown and to evaluate the progress made on the 15 demands submitted to Minister Blade Nzimande in particular.
An invitation was formally sent to the Minister on Wednesday 17 March 2021 inviting him to discuss the demands put forward directly with SAUS and SRCs. SAUS was notified on Saturday 20 March 2021 that Minister Blade would not be joining due to other commitments and that the Deputy Minister would be sent.
Following robust engagements and a program of action for the week, SRCs have collectively condemned the Minister and Deputy Minister for failing to meet with them directly to engage on the demands of students.
Listen to the interview on Kaya Breakfast:
As a result student demonstrations at universities are expected to continue this week, with students set to take the protests to the Union Buildings.
Students have been calling for an end to financial exclusion and also want government and universities to agree to scrap historical debt.
The unions Bongani Mahlangu says an agreement has been reached by the various SRCs to take their fight directly to government.
