Twitter becomes the first social media platform to allow cannabis ads in the US.
On Wednesday, Elon Musk’s Twitter became the first social media site to permit cannabis businesses to advertise their brands and goods in the United States.
The company previously restricted advertising to CBD topical goods produced from hemp, while Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok all have a “no cannabis advertising policy” because marijuana is still illegal on the federal level.

In a blog post published on Wednesday, the company declared the change in policy and promised to make it easier for “more brands to connect with the cannabis conversation” on Twitter.
“As of today, in certain US states we have taken measures to relax our Cannabis Ads policy to create more opportunities for responsible cannabis marketing – the largest step forward by any social media platform,”
“Going forward, Twitter is allowing advertisers to promote brand preference and informational cannabis-related content for CBD, THC, and cannabis-related products and services.” said Twitter’s US Sales and Partnerships head, Alexa Alianiello.
Twitter stated that it would allow cannabis businesses to advertise so long as they had the appropriate paperwork, had gone through the approval process, were only directed at the regions in which they have operating licenses, and, most crucially, were not directed at anybody under the age of 21.
