AKA, real name Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, has passed away.
The multi-award-winning rapper was shot and killed outside a nightclub on Florida Road, Durban at the age of 35.
AKA was booked to perform later that evening.
The musician’s family confirmed the news of his passing through an official statement on Saturday, 11 February, but are awaiting further details from Durban police.
“It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son, and confirm his untimely and tragic passing on the evening of 10 February 2023.
To us, Kiernan was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend, and most importantly a father to his beloved daughter Kairo.
To many, he was AKA, Supamega, Bhova, and the many other names of affection his legion of fans called him by. Our son was loved and he gave love in return. In this time of grief, we appeal for your compassion, time, and space to congregate as a family to decide on the upcoming days.”
According to several reports, AKA was gunned down with his longtime friend and manager Tibz “Tebello” Motsoane.
Information gathered suggests that the All Eyes On Me hitmaker was not killed in a drive-by shooting, as police say AKA, his security detail and Tibz were approached by two unknown and armed men.
All three were shot at close range and no one else was hurt in the shooting incident.
Tibz played a major role in helping AKA gain commercial success, especially in the early stages of his career.
The Forbes family appeal for compassion, time and space to congregate as a family and decide on the upcoming days.
Please note that this is a developing story.
