Another horrific tanker collision has claimed 6 lives in Limpopo on Monday, 26 December.
This comes two days after the deadly Boksburg gas tanker explosion which has since claimed 18 lives, with the death toll likely to climb.
In the recent tragic accident, the driver of the gas tanker had a head-on collision with a bakkie. The collision claimed 6 lives, including that of the driver of the bakkie.
Four other passengers between the ages of 8 and 15-years as well as an infant were also killed.
While police suspect that speed was the reason for the crash, the truck driver said it was likely that the driver of the bakkie had fallen asleep at the wheel.
In a statement to police, the truck driver said he saw the bakkie veer from its lane and come directly at the tanker.
MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Limpopo, Florence Radzilani pleaded with motorists to obey the rules of the road.
“We are saddened by these fatalities and send our deepest condolences to the families that are affected in this tragic incident. We continue to plead with all motorists to obey the rules of the road, for everyone to arrive at their respective destinations alive and sound.”
Meanwhile there are calls for transport companies to check the routes their trucks are to take and make sure that drivers are qualified.
An investigation into both the Boksburg explosion and Limpopo tanker crash are underway.
