Chris Hani’s killer, Janusz Walus has been discharged from hospital and released from prison.
This after the Department of Justice and Correctional Services were ordered to release Walus on parole, despite Justice Minister Ronald Lamola denying the Polish killer parole in 2020.
Chief Justice Raymond Zondo ruled that Lamola’s justifications for keeping Walus behind bars were irrational and ordered that arrangements be made for Walus to be released within 10-days.
Walus who was supposed to be released on parole in the first week of December was stabbed by one of his cell mates on the eve of his release.
He had since spent the past few days in hospital as a result of receiving medical attention for his injuries.
News of Walus’ release has caused massive outrage from a number of political parties who staged protests to voice their anger that Chris Hani’s killer gets to walk free.
Walus fatally stabbed Hani three times in 1993 and was sentenced to death. However, when apartheid ended in 1994 and the death penalty was abolished, his sentencing was changed to life imprisonment.
