COJ has shared the latest regarding their fleet and their plans to retrieve it from AVIS
This comes after Avis car rental withdrew some of its rented fleet from the City of Joburg amid delays to approve a new contract as well as processes.
Vehicles that were taken by the AVIS include 4 253 “non-specialised” fleet – cars, bakkies, police cars, City Power trucks, Joburg Water bakkies and trucks that are driven by City of Joburg officials from all departments and entities.
Point of View with Phemmelo Motene spoke to Leah Knott, MMC of Group Corporate and Shared Services in the City of Johannesburg about what is currently being done to the City of Johannesburg fleet and their plans to retrieve it from AVIS.

Leah Knott said what is happening in the city is all political sabotage.
“We are dealing with a matter of political sabotage at the moment because of the current contract we have with AVIS came to its conclusion at the end of the term before us.
The procurement had not yet started and should have started by January 2021, unfortunately in government, these things take a while, you need at least six months to a year to procure a contract this big,” she said Knott.

She gave an update on the progress of resolving the fleet issues.
“At the moment it is only 19 of the vehicles from JMPD that are affected, I think it is about 1 300 non-specialised vehicles, and 19 of those are affected.”
“It is only Joburg Water, no other entities are affected, we have resolved the Afrirent potion which is the larger potion, this is about 2961 vehicles. These are all on the ground and they are all service delivery vehicles.”
