About 90 ‘illegal’ homes have been demolished in Senwabarwana, Polokwane this week.
This comes as the Blouberg Municipality claims the home owners had acquired the land illegally and claimed the land belongs to the municipality.
According to Blouberg Municipality, the home owners whose homes were demolished allegedly paid R7000 for their individual plots of land.
The land was purchased from an individual who claimed to be the owner. It is unclear if the person responsible has been found and whether legal action will be taken against the individual or if an arrest will be made.
A court order allowed the municipality to go ahead and demolish the 90 illegal homes which were found to be built on municipal land.
TimesLive reports that the municipality had been in communication with the home owners for 3-years but the engagements were not going anywhere as the occupants refused to comply.
“The occupants bought sites from an individual who claimed to own this piece of land. We engaged with them for more than 3-years but did not reach any conclusion. That is why we took the legal route and a court ordered the illegal occupants to remove their structures.
The court order was issued last year and the structures were not removed, so we are enforcing the ruling with the sheriff of the court and removing the structures.”
Municipal manager, Refilwe Ramothwala reportedly served the occupants a notice on Sunday and their homes were demolished on Monday, 24 October.
