Security has been upgraded as the Department of Education (DOE) prepares for the 2022 matric final exams.
In a bid to prevent cheating and paper leaks, the Gauteng DOE has tight measures in place and believes this years exams will run smoothly.
Addressing media, head of the department, Edward Mosuwe said that not only has security around the papers been upgraded with stricter protocols but they are also taking a zero tolerance approach to anyone caught cheating.
“Transgressions usually occur during printing and we have systems in place to take care of that aspect. There is adequate upgraded security, we have taken care of the human element at the printing site.
Experience has taught us what to do, with most violations occurring when papers are transported to schools.”
Mosuwe was referring to the 2020 matric paper leak where Gauteng and Limpopo learners had access to the leaked Mathematics Paper 2.
The leak took place a few hours before matriculants were to sit and write the paper.
While the department says it cannot plan for a disaster, they are prepared to mitigate any paper leaks from happening.
The Class of 2022 will have to write their final exams amid loadshedding and no school will be exempt from the rolling blackouts.
Mosuwe said that the department will have to work with schools to manage loadshedding times and will opt to move matriculants from an affected site to an unaffected site.
The department may provide generators to schools if the need arises especially in areas where crimes are prevalent.
