A moving AMG advert that details the life of Springbok rugby captain, Siya Kolisi has just been released. The insert, AMG Uncovered, reveals Kolisi’s tough upbringing to his well deserved rise to international acclaim.
From humble beginnings, the captain of the 2019 World Champions shares how he used to play with a brick and imagine it was a toy car.
“When I was a kid, I made do with everything that was around me, I didn’t know what else was out there. My toy car was a brick, I used to push that brick, I used to wash it, park it. I was fine with what I had.
I used whatever I had around me to make me happy.”
Siya Kolisi talks about his humble beginnings
As a child, Siya and his family grew up in very poor conditions, with little to eat in his Port Elizabeth township home.
The first black captain of the South African rugby team is now one of the most sought-after sportsmen in the country, which is a far cry from his childhood days.
Despite his hardship, Siya dreamed of one day becoming a world famous rugby player.
“I used to go to school barefeet to get my one meal a day and used to tell my teachers, one day I’ll become a South African rugby player.”
In school, Siya says he wasn’t a standout player and it wasn’t until a rival team’s coach told him, “you’re going to make it” that the ambitious youngster decided to give it his all.
Kolisi’s message to every dreamer is that nothing is impossible, and says if he could get out of a situation he never thought he would be able to, anyone can.
