Public figure Thami Dish is shocked and “dismayed by the inclusion” of his name in the Showmax special Mohale On The Record.
This comes after Mohale revealed in his special that Thami “knew” about the abuse and apologised on behalf of Somizi, promising that it (the abuse) would never happen again.
Thami Dish, who’s built a career “rooted in advocacy and activism for Queer people in South Africa “says he endured domestic abuse in a relationship that lasted many years in his youth.
“Finding the strength to leave that relationship and build a life of my own landed me in working closely with issues of Queer Rights Advocacy in my personal, professional, and inter-relationship life.
Thami notes that he is triggered by the claims that he has condoned abuse in relationships close to him over the years.
He explains that while he may have facilitated a meeting between the two parties at his house following an altercation, it was purely for the purpose of having both parties share their side of the story.
“At no point was a suggestion made by myself that Mr Motaung returns to a home or a relationship where there was ongoing abuse.”
While applauding Mohale for speaking out, Thami says he would have preferred to be afforded a right to reply in the instances where his name is implicated, especially as an enabler of abuse.
“I think production companies and broadcasters should make the effort to be especially careful and responsible in their portrayal of these stories.
“These are people’s lives and livelihoods and not just mere sensational drama with which to make more money.”
