Johannesburg residents will have to dig deeper into their pockets as City Power implements a 7.4% price hike on electricity.
The new tariff will be put into immediate effect for July after the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) approved the increase.
City Power initially proposed a 9.61% average increase but after consideration of the current economic conditions, a revision was proposed.
In a statement City Power detailed the 22 different tariffs for its 4 customer categories, namely: residential, business, agricultural and large power users.
All tariff sub-categories are increasing by 7.4% except for the business convention tariff that has been limited to 4.4% to gradually align with the NERSA benchmarks.
This means, according to City Power that a resident of Pimville, Soweto who uses 350MW a month who used to pay R592.93 will now be paying R51.02 more including VAT.
The new tariff price would then be R643.93 and the cost on the statement released by City Power is incorrect.
As per the statement City Power said the new price would be R734.03 for 350MW which is a huge R141,10 increase.
The new tariffs are detailed on City Power’s website.
