Transport minister, Fikile Mbalula has called for a ban on the trade of scrap metal, He says the theft and vandalism of critical rail infrastructure is sabotaging SA’s economy.
Mbalula made the call at the briefing on the newly approved National Rail Policy White Paper. He adds that trade and industry minister, Ebrahim Patel, is working on a law that will see scrap metal dealers jailed for 15 years.
Thomas and Skhumba listeners were asked, “what other laws do they think SA needs to introduce?”
Skhumba adds, “I don’t understand how you go and kill four people and still go to prison and have 3 meals a day. We see these stories every day.”
A listener argues how bringing back the death penalty will not work. “Our biggest problem starts with the investigation process. Where a case is not being investigated thoroughly and we’d end up having something arrested for something they did not do. This is why I think we’d have a challenge with the death penalty,” she says.
Another listener believes the one right that needs to be reworked is the Skwattas rights. “People just take over a person’s property knowing very well that they have no right to do that. But the law will protect them in any case. For me, I think that needs to be changed.”
