Cash-in-transit heists are on the increase in the country, with 60 heists recorded during October to December last year. In February, one of the deadliest heists occurred in Rosettenvile, where 8 gunmen were killed.
Police will be investigating a case of CIT robbery, attempted murder and possession of explosives.
One of the security guards is said to be in a critical condition in hospital after sustaining a spinal injury.
The N4 was closed for several hours after the incident to clear the scene.
