One police officer and 8 gunmen were killed during the latest cash-in-transit heist in Rosettenville.
The shootout occurred on Monday afternoon, in what residents call a scene from a war movie.
Police Minister Bheki Cele said the group of around 25 heavily armed men were on the SAPS and Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) radar.
The group were being tracked for a week, with police monitoring their movement.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela said the group of gunmen tried to carry out the crime last week but did not.
When police intercepted them in Rosettenville, the suspects were trying to escape to their safe house.
Eight suspects were killed in the shootout and died on scene. Four police officers were shot but are in a stable condition.
One officer died after being shot in the chest.
According to police the group of suspects include foreign nationals from Zimbabwe, Botswana as well as South Africans.
Armed with AK-47 rifles, heavy artillery and using high-performanced vehicles that were hijacked, police say the group are highly skilled criminals.
“We are working with heartless people who are prepared to kill us,” Cele said.
