Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga announced the matric pass rate for the Class of 2021 is at 76.4%.
This is a slight improvement of the 2020 pass rate of 76.2%.
The Free State is the best-performing province with the highest pass rate of 85.7%.
Minister Motshekga who addressed some of the top achieving candidates said the results were a testament of the marked improvement in the country’s education system.
Despite facing an academic year full of adversities in the face of a global pandemic, the class of 2021 were commended for their results.
“There were no system irregularities reported that might have compromised the integrity and credibility of the 2021 National Senior Certificate examination.”

Motshekga noted that the matric pass rate has consistently improved over the past 10 years.
From 60% in 2009, the overall pass rate has been maintained at over 70% in recent years.
Tshwane South was the district with the highest pass rate at 89.3%.
The top 10 districts each achieved a pass above 84%.
Gauteng and the Free State were amongst the Top 10 provinces with 4 districts each named the top-performing districts.
With a 82.8% pass, Gauteng is the second top performing province, followed by the Western Cape at 81.2%.
Minister Motshekga encouraged the matriculants who were unsuccessful to not give up.
Announcing the results on Thursday, the minister concluded her address by thanking the Class of 2021.
“My children, thank you very much, your future is in your hands and I know you’ve made the correct choices by being the best. You carry the hopes of your families, and for us you also carry the hopes of the nation. We expect you to contribute to the prosperity, growth and development of this country.”

On Wednesday, the IEB Class of 2021 achieved a matric pass rate of 98.39%.
