The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a severe weather warning for Gauteng and parts of the country on Tuesday.
Severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail, damaging winds and excessive lightning are predicted for Gauteng as well as central and eastern parts of the North West.
Heavy rain is also expected in the central and easter parts of the Free State, the Mpumalanga Highveld and south-western parts of Limpopo.
The inclement weather could have a devastating impact on infrastructure, warns SAWS.
“The weather will also affect settlements, vehicles, livestock and livelihood. Heavy downpours could lead to flooding of roads, settlements and low-lying areas,” SAWS says.
Similar weather warnings have been issued for western parts of the Eastern Cape.

Data shows that most of the country received above-normal rainfall for the first 10 days of December.
“La Niña conditions are expected to continue during the summer season and the predictions for rainfall over the larger part of the country are for enhanced probabilities of above-normal rainfall during the January-February-March, February-March-April and March-April-May 2022 seasons,” SAWS says.
Gauteng motorists had to contend with heavy rain at the start of the month.
According to reports, parts of Pretoria were flooded with some areas recording up to 50mm of rain.
