Officials are urging holidaymakers yet to embark on their travel to slow down and adhere to road rules.
The N3 Toll Concession’s Miles le Roux says officials have recorded an alarming number of serious crashes on the N3 since the start of the summer holiday season.
Le Roux adds that there has been a spike in crashes particularly in the second week of December.
The transport engineer says this is when southbound traffic volumes began to increase.
Members of N3 Toll Concession’s route services have reviewed the latest traffic data.
They expressed grave concerns about the severity of the crashes and the number of fatalities involving single-vehicle crashes.

Speeding is a probelm
The N3TC says initial reports indicate that drivers are regularly exceeding the speed limits along most parts of the route.
Le Roux says motorists are also not reducing their speed when roads are wet or visibility is poor.
“Currently, there is little evidence of any patience on the road, and it seems that drivers’ frustrations are aggravated by the long delays caused by the serious road crashes,” he adds.
The N3TC is appealing to all motorists to “take every precautionary measure to ensure that they, and their fellow travellers, arrive at their destinations safely”.
“A collective effort is required to stem this worrying tide. Please slow down and take it easy on the road. Remember, at high speeds even the slightest distraction may cause you to lose control of your vehicle,” Le Roux says.
So far there have been several crashes, some fatal, along the N3.
In the latest incident, three people were killed in a horrific crash near Lions River in KwaZulu-Natal.
Emergency services spokesperson, Robert Mckenzie, says a woman and two men were declared dead at the scene on Wednesday morning.
At least one other person was treated for injuries.
