What better way to end the year than to have the legendary Sello Maake KaNcube as your last celebrity guest for 2021? Following a year filled with so much backlash and growth, Mac G caught up with the renowned thespian.
During their sitdown, Sello went into the finest detail about what makes an actor great.
“You know when actors talk about getting into character, that is the biggest BS ever. I’m sorry but I’m going to dispel this myth. There is no getting into character – character is defined by action.
“As an actor, you end up playing things that people do. The person who writes the story actually writes what he does, and all you have to do as an actor is do those actions,” he explains.
“I think what we want to say when we talk about getting into character is that we are focusing on the action we are going to do (I’m going to do this, I’m going to do that).
“We want to say look at how hard I am working but the truth of the matter is all you are just doing is just following the actions.
“The actions of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare has written them down. All the actor does is do. You may find that you like so and so’s a way of doing those actions. In the script, there is no character, but a series of actions that a writer has put on there, and you as an actor you bring your whole life experience on top of that.”
He says that the most important thing is observation.
“You observe life outside of you and inside of you. Your body is a tool and you’ve got to know it like a musician knows his instrument.
“But I don’t think that is how actors are being taught, that you’ve got to understand how your body functions.
“A musician knows their instrument like the back of their hand and that’s how you as an actor got to know your body. You’ve got to be able to replicate what you need to do within a scene.”
He adds that one’s body has an in-built sense of truth.
“For instance, if you have an acrimonious break-up or fight with somebody, and you were angry and throwing things and you don’t see that person for over a year. The next time you see them, you will be triggered.
“That is because your body remembers. So you as an actor, you’ve got to remember these sensations,” shared the legend.
