We’re almost at the finish line of 2021 and for many of us surviving the year has been an accomplishment in itself. On Midday Joy with Andy Maqondwana, the team reflects on the lessons from 2021.
For many South Africans the year brought with it many hardships, much the same as 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic has not let go its grip on the world yet. Many Midday Joy listeners shared that their biggest lesson this year was learning how to accept loss.
Losing loved ones. Saying goodbye to prized possessions. Closing businesses. Being let go from work have been some of the common responses.
As we look back on the year that’s been, one thing that shines through is that most have a newfound appreciation for the little things.
Midday Joy listeners share their lessons from 2021:
Top 5 lessons from 2021:
- Change can be scary but you just have to embrace it
The uncertainty that change brings can be overwhelming. But crisis can also be viewed optimistically as a new opportunity. A chance to develop your skillset using the resources you have at hand.
- Never stop learning from everything life throws at you
One thing Covid-19 taught us is to change perspective. The year forced us to introspect, be more empathetic because everyone was affected.
- You’re stronger than you think
Strength can be viewed in many ways. From an ability to adapt, overcome and simply push oneself daily to get through the day. Mindsets were challenged a lot since Covid-19 hit and many viewed the setbacks as motivation to come back stronger than before.
- While you can do anything you set your mind on alone, you don’t need to take on everything on your own
Many avoid asking for help because it makes them look weak. One lesson from 2021 is that we’re all just human. We need someone in our corner. It’s been an isolating year and while you do hold the power to do anything you set your mind on, it’s easier when you have someone cheering you on.
This goes without saying. Your health matters. Take the time to prioritise your mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.
