In this week’s installment of ‘Anonymous Advice,’ anonymous called on behalf of her sister to find out how she could help her get her job back after being dismissed because of her illness.
“I’m calling on behalf of my sister who works at City of Johannesburg -she got diagnosed with breast cancer.
“After informing her manager, she was told to go back to the doctor. They suggested that she started chemo, which led to her dismissal,” anonymous shared.
“She went to a union to get help, and they informed her that there was nothing they could do if the municipality made that decision to dismiss her.
“No one has been able to help her get her job back. Now she is about to lose her flat. She has been getting financial assistance from loved ones. She has gone for the operation and has fully recovered now. Now she wants her job back.”

“I want to be quick at how we as employers go through the process of a person who has an illness.
“Usually, what we would do at work is put them on temporary disability because they will not function fully in their duties.
“And secondly, they do go through doctors, and doctors indicate if the person will be able to go to work or not,” she explains.
“So, unfortunately, if a person does get sick for over nine months, the business cannot pay the person.
“We then put them on dismissal due to ill health.
“I think what the lady should do now is find out back at work what processes were followed in her dismissal.
And if there are any monies that could be paid for her, through that disability fund that the company would normally have,” she advised.
