The DA has just lost Nelson Mandela Bay municipality to the ANC by 1 vote.
The ANC fielded its councillor Eugene Johnson and she won with 60 votes.
Former Bay mayor and the DA’s mayoral candidate Nqaba Bhanga received 59 votes.
Only 119 councillors voted as DA MPL Retief Odenaal — listed as a PR candidate councillor on the IEC list — was absent.
The metro’s new speaker is Gary van Niekerk of the Northern Alliance, who beat the DA’s Rano Kayser by one vote.

The metro’s council is split evenly between the ANC and DA, each of which have 48 seats, followed by the EFF with nine seats, the National Assembly with three seats, the ACDP and Freedom Front Plus with two, among other parties.

Johnson was voted in with the help of a bloc comprising GOOD, AIM, the UDM, DOP, Northern Alliance and PAC.
