Malema vows to build RDP houses in Sandton if EFF takes over City of Joburg

EFF leader Julius Malema has vowed that if his party takes over the City of Joburg, they will build RDP houses in Sandton.

Malema was speaking at the launch of the EFF’s election manifesto, which coincided with the 85th birthday celebrations of late struggle hero Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, at the weekend.

Addressing a gathering of around 15 000 people, the EFF CIC said their manifesto saw to the needs of the people, including the poor.

“The EFF government was going to identify land next to Sandton to build RDP houses in the area. This is to promote integrated human settlements. WE belong to each other and you must live together,” Malema told the crowd.

He added that the EFF would impose a property wealth tax on communities living in suburbs. He said the property wealth tax will affect those that live in big houses and have big yards.

“We are going to tax them because they are rich, they must subsidise the poor,” Malema said.

Commenting on the alleged hijacking of buildings in larger metro areas, he said the EFF is going to take back these buildings and convert them into homes for the poor.

He said they would be focusing on buildings in Hillbrow and Berea in Joburg and Sunnyside in Pretoria.

Social media reaction

It wasn’t long before Twitter users got wind of Malema’s manifesto and #Sandton and #VoetsekEFF topped trend lists.

Many did not seem too keen on the EFF’s plans to build RDP homes in the affluent suburb.

Last week, Malema said he believed that Sassa grant beneficiaries should not still be paying for lights and water. He added that under an EFF government, people receiving grants would not pay for water and electricity.

“The Sassa money is not enough. So who will pay for them,” he asked.

Malema said suburban residents will pay for services being used by grantees.

He said only a radical organisation can achieve this.

“We cannot allow people who get Sassa money to use the same money to pay for water and electricity,” he said.

    • regulate, in harmony with international standards, the processing of personal information by public and private bodies in a manner that gives effect to the right to privacy subject to justifiable limitations that are aimed at protecting other rights and important interests,
    1. Definitions and Interpretation

    1.1.“Personal Information” means information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person and where it is applicable, identifiable, existing juristic person, including all information as defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013. 

    1.2  Parliament assented to POPIA on 19 November 2013. The commencement date of section 1, Part A of Chapter 5, section 112 and section 113 was 11 April 2014. The commencement date of the other sections was 1 July 2020 (with the exception of section 110 and 114(4). The President of South Africa has proclaimed the POPI commencement date to be 1 July 2020.

     
    1.3. “Processing” means the creation, generation, communication, storage, destruction of personal information as more fully defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.  

    1.4. “You” or the “user” means any person who accesses and browses this website for any purpose.
