African National Congress (ANC) members in Johannesburg mobilised on William Nicol Drive in Fourways, picketing to highlight their pledge to rename the road Winnie Madikizela Mandela Drive.
Led by ANC Deputy Secretary-General (DSG) Jessie Duarte, the members called on residents to join in and sign the pledge for the road to Winnie M Mandela Drive after the late struggle icon.
Some are calling the renaming unnecessary and a waste of tax-payers money but the City of Johannesburg (COJ) aims to complete the renaming by the end of June.
Discussions for the renaming started three years ago and the COJ is ready to make official progress on the matter.
The DA is opposed to the decision and started an online petition against the renaming. Their reasons are not that they’re opposed to the renaming itself but rather the timing due to the impact of COVID-19 on businesses in the area.
