Episode 5 -The evolved DNA of the spaza shop
In its humble beginnings during the 70s,80s and 90s the spaza shop was a survivalist business in most South African townships. The spaza went and became a cite for tension when Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Somali and Ethiopian entered the market. All of them pitted with South Africans nationals.
This episode samples the feel of the modern day spaza shops in Meadowlands, Soweto. We put our feelers out to observe how far the spaza market has come. As a mini experiment, we compare the evolution of the spaza shop versus its ability to keep safe food standards.
