Friday’s topic on Kaya Drive was inspired by Sandile van Heerden’s social media post where he asked “When are you too old to be calling someone you’re dating boyfriend or girlfriend?”
Kaya Drive host Sizwe Dhlomo didn’t mind the term and didn’t take the term too seriously and calls his partner “his girlfriend.”
Sandile was a little more vocal however and said, “once you turn 21, leave boyfriend or girlfriend behind.”
At 43, Sandile feels it’s just wrong to be called someone’s boyfriend. The sports presenter who is currently in a relationship refers to his “girlfriend” as the Mrs.
Kaya News presenter Keneiloe Huma’s stance on the matter is that the term girlfriend and boyfriend refers to people who are in the dating phase of the relationship. According to her, there are stages in a relationship namely, the dating phase, the engagement phase and then marriage and each come with their own title.
- Dating – Girlfriend or Boyfriend
- Engagement – Fiancée or Fiancé
- Marriage – Wife or Husband
For Keneiloe each stage is important and as much as one could refer to the person they’re dating as “their partner” it’s not that big a deal.
So are we cancelling the girlfriend or boyfriend terminology? Nope! Not if Kaya Drive can help it. Sorry, Sandman.
