British Vogue has shaken the modelling industry by doing a first for the publication.
They recently revealed their February 2022 cover, featuring nine black women who are ‘redefining what it means to be a model’.
The models on the cover are the rising black supermodel in the fashion industry.
They are Adut Akech, Amar Akway, Majesty Amare, Akon Changkou, Maty Fall, Janet Jumbo, Abény Nhial, Nyagua Ruea and Anok Yai.
They will become the biggest group of black women to be on the cover of this world-renowned fashion and lifestyle magazine.
Back in 1974, it was unheard of to have a black woman on the cover of Vogue Magazine until Beverly Johnson became the first African-American supermodel, actress and businesswoman to grace the cover.
Daily Mail UK reports that the editor of British Vogue was born in Ghana, and later moved to London.
Speaking to the publication he said: “‘I saw all these incredible models from across Africa who were just so vivacious and smart. These girls are redefining what it is to be a fashion model.’
Issues of inclusion in the higher echelons of the fashion industry have been well documented.
Over there years there’s been a slow inclusion of other black people in the various other aspects of the fashion and beauty industry.
