The Department of Water and Sanitation opened more sluice gates at the Vaal Dam to manage the water inflows.
Four gates now manage the current water capacity of 110.4%.
The decision to open the gates follows the consistent heavy rains that happened in the catchments over the last couple of weeks.
The Vaal River is one 14 dams in the Integrated Vaal River System and the department continues to monitor the System and will guide the activities of the weather and the kind of inflow continuously.
The department also warns that it is critical for farmers and other communities downstream of the dam to move their equipment away from the further expected heavy flows.
Additionally, no one should risk crossing low-lying bridges that could be flooded.
The Vaal River weather forecast indicates that more rain will happen in the coming days.
