Woolworths South Africa recalls its chicken vienna products in South Africa and Botswana with immediate effect.
The reason for the recall is due to a cross contamination of milk protein between the chicken viennas and chicken and cheese viennas.
As a result Woolworths is recalling all its smoked chicken viennas, cocktail chicken viennas and halaal smoke chicken viennas with a sell by date of 27 May.
In a statement Woolworths said the recall is to prevent possible adverse side effects for customers who have an allergy to cow’s milk.
“Woolworths is recalling smoked chicken viennas, cocktail chicken viennas and halaal smoked chicken viennas with the sell by date, 27 May with immediate effect.
We along with our suppliers, proactively manage and prevent contamination of food, and through routine quality control tests we discovered a fault in a production line, which resulted in cross-contamination of milk protein between chicken viennas and chicken and cheese viennas.
While the cheese may not be obvious through taste or visible in the product, we are removing all the products from our shelves. Customers who have an allergy to cow’s milk may experience an adverse reaction to even trace amounts of milk protein. The chicken viennas do no have an allergy warning labelling.”
All chicken vienna variants are sold in South Africa and Botswana.
