It has been a tough few days for the residents of Eerstefabriek in Mamelodi, Pretoria after they experienced flooding due to heavy rains.
Many of them were left homeless as a result of the flooding of the Moretele River which destroyed their homes last Friday.
The residents are alleged to have occupied the land illegally after it was declared an uneven settlement as it is on the Riverbanks by the Town Planners.

“One of the residents explained that they even sent a memorandum, they did protests towards the end of last year. Delivered it to the union building, demanding the government to help them by providing permanent housing, there is a big history in terms of how the infrastructure is strrucured in the Mamelodi area. “
She also spoke to the residents who were affected and how they’ve been trying to find permanent solutions to their problems.
“One of the residents was explaining that yes they are aware that the land they are living on is illegally occupied, but they have no choice and that they are trying to at least live there temporarily while the government is finding a permanent relocation.”
